Tata Himalayan
Khardung La Challenge
Market Conditions & Context (2022 - 2023)
By 2022, corporate sustainability messaging demanded tangible action. As a premium natural mineral water sourced from Shivalik glaciers, Tata Consumer Products' "Himalayan" brand aimed to connect its product message directly to environmental preservation. The high-altitude desert of Ladakh was facing acute ecological pressure, with unpredictable winter glacial melts threatening local agricultural irrigation.
The Legacy "Before" State
Prior to the campaign design, the brand and region faced distinct challenges:
- • Passive Consumer Perceptions: Himalayan water was perceived as a static, premium bottled option, lacking an active emotional connection or visible CSR footprint.
- • Community Sowing Droughts: Mountain villages in Ladakh suffered from severe water shortages during the crucial spring planting months (April–May) due to altered glacier runoff patterns.
Strategic Execution & CSR Architecture
We designed an integrated cause campaign linking extreme sports sponsorship with community infrastructure development:
1. Title Sponsorship of the Khardungla Challenge
Tata Himalayan became the title sponsor for the Himalayan Khardungla Challenge (2022 and 2023 editions), widely known as the world's highest and toughest ultra-marathon. The grueling 72km race begins at 3,975m (Khardung village) and summits at the Khardung La pass (5,370m / 17,618 ft), highlighting human endurance and ecological vulnerability.
2. Climate Advocacy Film & Pledge
Produced a documentary film featuring the runners acting as climate ambassadors, juxtaposing their physical struggle against the environmental stress of Ladakhi villages. The campaign integrated a digital climate pledge film voiced by actor-activist Rahul Bose to drive awareness.
3. Khardung Village Reservoir Infrastructure
To execute the core purpose of "giving back to the source," Tata Himalayan funded and constructed a concrete and stone water reservoir in Khardung Village. This reservoir harvests winter glacial runoff, storing it as ice/water to supply agricultural irrigation canals during the dry spring sowing season.
Direct Results & Impact
The campaign succeeded in generating national visibility and resolving ecological bottlenecks:
- • Increased race finishers from **154 in 2022** to **211 in 2023**, expanding the event's global profile.
- • Secured seasonal agricultural water supply for **150+ local households** in Khardung village.
- • Earned **200+ news publications** and trended `#HimalayanDay` on Twitter, generating **5M+ impressions** and over **INR 12 Crore in PR value**.
